According to the US Census Bureau, HUD code manufactured homes represented 22.7 percent of all single family housing starts in 1998. Total industry shipments were 372,843 up 5.5 percent from1997. Sales of Multi Section represented 61.3 percent of all industry shipments compared to single section homes at 38.7 percent.

Affordability is a key factor in the growth of manufactured housing At an Average cost of $43,800 it is clear that a manufactured home is much more affordable than a site built home at an average cost of 136,425 (excluding land price). Manufactured homes are built in a factory controlled environment and are required to meet the strict HUD code which was established by the federal government to regulate the design, construction and safety of homes. The HUD code sets standards for heating, plumbing, air conditioning, thermal and electrical systems, structural design , construction, transportation, energy efficiency and fire safely.

For all of the reasons, many benefits of today's manufactured homes are being recognized by both consumers and public officials. More people realize that manufactured housing can provide them with the best housing value and quality.

Through various programs and initiatives, the industry continues to tackle outdated and obsolete zoning barriers and educate officials and consumers on how today's manufactured housing can meet there needs. the Industry is also working on opening up new, non traditional markets for manufactured homes in suburban area and urban markets.

With continued advances in technology and public acceptance, manufactured housing is positioned to be a major provider of quality housing in the 21st century.

There are approximately 19 million people who live full-time in over 8 million manufactured homes across the nation. According to a study by Foremost Insurance Company, they report satisfaction with their housing choice. Likewise, a recent Owens Coring Study, conducted by National Family Opinion, found 93 percent of manufactured home owners are satisfied with their housing choice.
